Gujarat Assembly Election 2017 : Notification

As the tenure of the current legislative assembly in Gujarat expires in December 2017, assembly elections will be held in the state again towards the end of 2017 or January, 2018.

The dates will be announced officially by the Election Commission of India few months prior to it. In the last assembly elections, the BJP won convincingly while the Congress emerged the runner-up.




In Gujarat assembly election 2012 there were 182 assembly seats, out of which the BJP won 115 seats while Congress won 61. The Gujarat Parivartan Party won 2 seats, as did the Nationalist Congress Party. The JD (U) retained the Jhagadia seat, the only one it has in the state. One seat went to an Independent candidate.

Narendra Modi returned to power to serve a third consecutive term as chief minister of the state. After his grand victory in the 2014 parliamentary elections and subsequent elevation as the Prime Minister of India, the chief minister’s post went to Anandiben Patel. She became the first female chief minister of Gujarat. However, Anandiben resigned from the post within two years due to her failure in handling the situation in the state during the Patidars and Dalit protest.

Now in 2017 Aam Aadmi Party is ready to contest the assembly polls in Gujarat for the first time. This will be a big threat to congress and BJP as AAP planning to go nationally. After defeats in all the four states Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand congress making a serious attempts to take advantage of Patidar Protest to win election. Hardik Patel who emerges as leader of Patidar protest in 2015 will be face of Shiv-Sena for Gujarat Assembly Election 2017. Sena which is contesting the upcoming election on its own is roping in Hardik Patel to gain Gujarati votes

Losing Gujarat to Congress would be a big setback for the BJP ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections which it will try to avoid at all costs.Evidently, there is a lot in stake for the main contenders including the Congress, BJP and AAP, in the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections, 2017.
